Annual Thanksgiving Beer Tasting

The Sturbridge Optimist Club will be hosting a beer tasting event from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Saturday evening, November 22, 2008 in the upstairs function room at Admiral T.J. O’Brien’s, 407 Main Street in Sturbridge, MA. Due to the popularity of this event, advance ticket purchase is recommended. Admission to the event is $25.00 per person and includes the sampling of at least 16 premium and micro-brewed malt beverages. Beers, ales, stouts, lagers and pilsners will be among those available for sampling and tasting, as available. Admission also includes a selection of hearty appetizers and dishes prepared for the event by the culinary staff of T.J. O’Brien’s. Tickets are now available from any member of the Club listed below, or if available, at the door on the evening of the event. During the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in raffles for prizes which will include many local fine dining experiences, gift baskets, and gift certificates, generously donated by local merchants. This year a special prize will be made available through a silent auction. The winning bidder will get to choose between a four hour evening sunset cruise or a four hour fishing trip, trolling for bluefin tuna off the coast of southern Maine. The trip is valued at $700.00 and will be awarded to the top bidder in the silent auction.
The Sturbridge Optimist Club is a local chapter of Optimist International. All monies raised from this event go directly to support the youth of Sturbridge and the tri-community area, in the form of various youth camp scholarships, donations to school libraries, funding for school field trips, bicycle safety programs, as well as essay and oratorical competitions. The Club also contributes to the Center of Hope, supporting their program participants through the Center’s annual Prom Program. The Sturbridge Optimist Club is made up of local business people and citizens interested in supporting local youth programs, and is currently seeking new members. Gingerbread House Contest at OSV

Join the fun and start your own Christmas tradition....enter the 1st annual Gingerbread House Contest at Old Sturbridge Village! Four categories to compete in, including: Family, Youth Group, Adult, Business or Organization. $100.00 cash prize for first place finish in each category. Ribbon awarded for best of show, as voted by those attending the six evenings of Christmas by Candlelight.

No cardboard. Entries must be made entirely of edible materials with the exception of the foundation. First place awards in each category will receive $100.00. Open judging of the show will take place by the audience and the winning entrant will receive a best of show ribbon. All entries will be on display during the Christmas by Candlelight program at Old Sturbridge Village. Dinner in a Country Village

On Saturdays in November (1, 8, 15, 22) from 5:00pm to 9:30pm, enjoy a unique opportunity to prepare and eat a meal the way early New Englanders did. The Parsonage is the setting for this Saturday-night program, where costumed interpreters oversee the preparations, but the guests do the chopping, mixing, and stirring. Reservations required. Participants roast meat using a tin reflector oven, fire a brick bake oven, and mull spiced cider over the hearth before sitting down to enjoy the results, all by candlelight. 17th Annual White Christmas in West Brookfield

On Sunday, December 7th, enjoy the old-fashioned atmosphere in this beautiful historic town. Then clip clop of the horse drawn hayrides, carolers and the sparkling white lights throughout the town to make a Christmas celebration not to be missed.
There will be many open houses at shops, churches, the library and businesses and free raffles. A craft show featuring area artisans will be held at Ye Old Tavern and Quaboag On The Common. The entertainment and refreshments will be provided by West Brookfield Fire Department, West Brookfield Senior Center, Sacred Heart of Jesus, First Congregational Church and Whitefield Methodist Church. A music program will be presented by West Brookfield Elementary School also featuring Elves "R" Us gift sale and warm refreshments. The highlight of the day's festivities will be the town tree lighting, followed by a Chrismas concert in the Great Hall on the 2nd floor of the Town Hall.

Join in caroling around the illuminated 19th-century Village, with visiting performers from local schools and churches. Escape the frenzy of a modern Christmas with an enchanted evening of gingergbread, roasted chestnuts, music, dance, and a sleigh ride (weather permitting). Meet Father Christmas and chat with Santa Claus (bring your camera!). Additional performers include the OSV Dancers and holiday magic and puppets from Robert Olson.
How did fruitcake and roasted chestnuts become associated with Christmas? Are there plums in plum pudding? What’s the significance of the Yule log? Discover the history of Christmas cards, exchanging gifts, hanging stockings, Christmas trees, mistletoe, holly, poinsettias, and candy canes. You'll learn about these traditions and more! You'll also have an opportunity to taste samples of several foods long associated with the holiday. Hearthside Bounty, an Evening at Bullard Tavern

Saturday, January 17 at 6:00pm, travel the candlelit path to the Bullard Tavern, on the Common in the historical Village, to experience a 19th-century Tavern bursting with entertainment and a lavish feast! In early New England, the country tavern was an important gateway to a world of information, entertainment, and social activity. The Hearthside Bounty at Bullard Tavern recreates an evening at an early 19th-century tavern. In addition to a bountiful repast, guests may enjoy beverages fashionable in early New England, hear tunes from an earlier time performed by a costumed interpreter, learn about period games and entertainment, and sit in for a hand of a 19th-century card game with costumed staff. A reproduction 18th-century clock jack roasts beef "to a turn" in front of a roaring fire, and costumed interpreters demonstrate the preparation of delights such as pounded cheese and mulled cider.
