History

West Brookfield was the first section of the original Brookfield grant to be settled.  Several small industries and farming remain the main local means of livelihood, but the town also has several light manufacturing companies who employ people from the area.

In 1798 Isaiah Thomas edited the first Brookfield newspaper.  Ebenezer Merriam & Co. took over the paper in 1802, and Ebenezer's sons purchased the rights to publish Noah Webster's dictionary.  On Foster Hill Road is a large boulder from which parson George Whitefield preached to more than 5,000 alleged sinners in 1741.  Indian Rock, a natural rock formation was used by King Philip's warriors in 1675, when they attacked the local fortified house.
